Visitors and interns spend varying lengths of time at Light Morning
during the warmer months of the year. Apprentices and caretakers live
here year-round.
Apprentices, having already experienced the community as interns, are
exploring whether Light Morning may be their path with heart. Through
the four seasons of the year, they try on the role of crew member or
staff member rather than passenger or guest. Deep within, they’re
asking questions and seeking confirmation. "Is this my calling? Is
this my place? How do my gifts and interests fit like a needed spoke
into the wheel of Light Morning?"
Caretakers have received such a confirmation and ripened into such a
knowing. They are therefore able to say, "This is my path,
my calling, my place. This is my family. This is where I choose
to put down roots. To make my stand."
It’s a quirky calling. Like one of the early promotional campaigns
for the Peace Corps promised, "Hard work. Primitive living
conditions. 11¢ an hour." For caretakers, the work’s never done,
the entire lifestyle is challenging, and there’s no one to pay us even
11¢ an hour. As the Peace Corps campaign implied, however, and as those
who give their lives to this vision discover, the intangible rewards are
enormous.
Caretakers see Light Morning as a conducive environment for
transmutation and renewal. They see themselves fashioning an engine
capable of utilizing higher octanes of energy. And they watch this
energy manifest in subtle or not so subtle ways—as small gestures of
caring and awareness; as delightful tokens of synchronicity; and as a
cultivated appreciation for whatever the playful moment may bring.
Viewing the world at large, caretakers acknowledge an escalating
planetary crisis and the ratcheting up of anxieties as the needle on the
pressure cooker creeps higher. Yet they mostly focus on the equally
remarkable opportunities.
Finally, caretakers recognize that Light Morning is a
multi-generational endeavor. As the community moves into another phase
of renewal, and takes on more passengers and crew, the current crew is
being called upon to ensure that the vessel is shipshape. That it’s
ready to receive those who are coming.
